Cellular One

Cellular One is the trade name of the cellular service offered by Western Wireless. It was originally the trade name of one of the first mobile telephone service providers. In 1977, the American Radio Telephone Service and Motorola formed Cellular One to offer service to the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area. In 1984, cellular service began in the Baltimore/DC area. The Baltimore/DC service, and the rights to the name Cellular One, were sold from Metromedia to Southwestern Bell in 1987. When SBC Communications and BellSouth merged their wireless operations into Cingular Wireless, the Cellular One name was then picked up by Western Wireless.
