Cedar Falls, IowaCedar Falls is a city located in Black Hawk County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 36,145. It was originally named "Sturgis Falls." Geography Cedar Falls is located at 42°31'25" North, 92°26'47" West (42.523520, -92.446402). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 74.8 km² (28.9 mi²). 73.3 km² (28.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.04% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 36,145 people, 12,833 households, and 7,558 families residing in the city. The population density is 493.1/km² (1,277.2/mi²). There are 13,271 housing units at an average density of 181.1/km² (468.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.14% White, 1.57% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.61% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 1.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 12,833 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% are married couples living together, 7.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.1% are non-families. 25.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.91. In the city the population is spread out with 18.0% under the age of 18, 30.6% from 18 to 24, 20.5% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 26 years. For every 100 females there are 88.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $40,226, and the median income for a family is $56,158. Males have a median income of $37,235 versus $26,312 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,140. 16.7% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line.
