Cedar Bluff, Alabama

Cedar Bluff is a town located in Cherokee County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 1,467.

Geography

Cedar Bluff is located at 34°13'14.182" North, 85°35'45.596" West (34.220606, -85.595999). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.7 km² (4.1 mi²). 10.3 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.40% water. The city sits on Lake Weiss.

History

The city began as a meeting of the roads to Livingston, Georgia, Lyerly, Georgia, and Centre, Alabama. To the West of the City, there's a Civil War site where Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest defeated Able Streight and his band of raiders.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,467 people, 630 households, and 444 families residing in the town. The population density is 142.7/km² (369.3/mi²). There are 975 housing units at an average density of 94.8/km² (245.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 87.18% White, 11.38% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 630 households out of which 29.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% are married couples living together, 16.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.4% are non-families. 27.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.80. In the town the population is spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.6 males. The median income for a household in the town is $29,211, and the median income for a family is $33,984. Males have a median income of $29,750 versus $20,231 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,864. 21.1% of the population and 19.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.8% of those under the age of 18 and 17.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
