Catchpoints

Catchpoints are a set of railway points used to deflect any runaway wagons away from a mainline, if needs be derailing them in the process. The catchpoints may consist of a full turnout with two switchblades, or as little as a single switchblade. A Derail serves a similar purpose. The rational behind catchpoints include:
  • the runaways may go undetected, especially before the days of track circuits, leading to a serve crash involving at worst passenger train.
  • better to trap the runaways at low speed before they build up speed on a long falling grade.
