castor, alberta

Castor is a small town in the Canadian province of Alberta at 52°13N‑111°54W elev. 2680 feet (816.8 meters) intersected by Highway 12 and 861 approx. 100 miles (160 km) east of Red Deer. It was incorporated July 13, 1910. Castor is French (Latin) for Beaver: the nearby Battle River is home to these animals. The population was 935 according to the 2001 Census. Castor is known for its duck and geese migration in the fall since its territory includes many stopping points well frequented by migrating waterfowl. The town's main industries are agriculture, oil and gas services, and mining.
