Cass County, Texas

Cass County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 30,438. Its county seat is Linden6. Cass County is named for U.S. Senator Lewis Cass from Michigan who had favored the annexation of Texas to the United States.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,487 km² (960 mi²). 2,428 km² (937 mi²) of it is land and 60 km² (23 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.39% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 30,438 people, 12,190 households, and 8,654 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km² (32/mi²). There are 13,890 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 78.20% White, 19.47% Black or African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.65% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. 1.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 12,190 households out of which 30.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.90% are married couples living together, 12.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.00% are non-families. 26.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.95. In the county, the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 24.50% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 17.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 92.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.50 males. The median income for a household in the county is $28,441, and the median income for a family is $35,623. Males have a median income of $30,906 versus $19,726 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,777. 17.70% of the population and 14.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.20% of those under the age of 18 and 17.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
