Casey And Andy

Casey and Andy is an online web comic by Andy Weir. It features the adventures of two mad scientists (based on Weir himself and his best friend Casey Grimm) and of their friends and acquaintances (some of whom are named after Weir's friends and acquaintances, though often not significantly resembling them). It is typically updated three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and runs with a gag-a-comic format with occasional storylines and running gags. It originally had the tagline "Mad scientist roommates who periodically die!". The comic has a strong flavor of science and history fact, often from obscure sources. Strong parallels are suspected by some readers between Casey and Andy's real life (if any) and the events in the comic. Some strips are inspired by current events, as with the Mars landing sequence.

Characters

Primary (Andy) dimension

Most of the comic happens in this dimension, and the main characters live here.
  • Andy Weir: Andy is a lunatic. The things he does don't always make sense, even in his own deranged mind. His girlfriend is Satan. He has died innumerable times. He dabbles with dark magic and mad science. His best friend and worst enemy is Casey. He doesn't get along too well with Casey's girlfriend, Mary, and the feeling is mutual. But, while disliking her, he has never actually tried to kill her (except for the punji trap), unlike with Casey. He has repeatedly killed not just Casey, but himself as well, usually by mistake.
  • Casey Grimm: Casey is a perfect example of a mad scientist bent on global domination. One way or another, all of his inventions have something to do with that goal. He frequently slips into his "Dr. X" persona (supposedly a secret identity, although everybody in the house knows who it is), wherein he dons a black mask and talks like an evil overlord. He has the technical genius to accomplish his goals, but he is often distracted or unintentionally thwarted by Andy's poorly thought out actions. Also, he seems to be a target for abuse by aliens. His girlfriend, Mary, loves him nonetheless. If there is a leader to the strange assortment of people living in the house, it is Casey.
  • Mary MacTavish: Mary is Casey's girlfriend. She must really love him to put up with his quirks (trying to take over the world) and his roommate. She is by far the easiest to get along with in the household. She is a normal woman (well, with Andy-installed retractable metal claws) trapped in a paranormal household containing two mad scientists and the Dark Lord of Evil. Still, she seems to take everything in stride, and only feels called upon to set Andy on fire from time to time. Despite hating Andy, she gets along with his girlfriend, Satan, quite well, and the two often have tea and "girl talk". She cannot tolerate puns and, in her Pun Police outfit, often shoots punsters on sight.
  • Satan: Satan is the fallen angel, cast out of Paradise by the LORD. She can assume any shape, and she has chosen this one for now. She is the celestial embodiment of evil, and Andy's girlfriend. Despite her job and reputation, she is easy enough to get along with, and actually quite polite. For the most part, she only uses her immense evil powers in small ways, but there's always the hint that she could do more if she wanted to. Note, however, that she is completely incapable of "girl talk" in the traditional sense.
  • Cujo: Andy's cat, whose only goal in life appears to be to annoy his owner.
  • Jenn Brozek: Jenn lives next door to Casey and Andy, and therefore repeatedly suffers collateral damage from their failed experiments. This makes her understandably angry. She has an unrequited crush on Quantum Cop and has made repeated attempts to be noticed by him, but for all his intelligence, he never actually seems to catch on.
  • Quantum Cop: A very intelligent policeman who can deduce even the strangest courses of events through pure logic, and is never tricked by any excuses. He has won so many Nobel Prizes that he hardly even notices when he receives another one. His intelligence lapses only when it comes to Jenn.
  • Lord Milligan: Looking like a completely black shadow except for his eyes. He wants to take over the world, and is a very traditional villain, placing a high importance on building his secret hideout with lava pools, ventilation ducts that can be crawled through, a self-destruct system that goes off if he is slain, and similar cliches. He wishes to kill Casey and Andy, and has succeeded on several occasions.
  • The Planet Devourer: A very cute little pink creature with fangs, that considers Cujo its mother. It was created by Lord X for the purpose of forcing the world to bow to him or be devoured. As per Lord X's plans, it can consume any kind of matter and completely destroys whatever it consumes; however, it takes very small bites and would take thousands of years to do any noticeable damage to the planet.
  • The Mime Assassin: As the world's greatest master of stealth, he has been hired twice by Lord Milligan to eliminate his enemies. Although he is skilled and has even managed to disable Satan using a squirt gun filled with holy water, he was eventually defeated both times.
  • Don Cindy: A member of the Girl Scout Mafia. Protagonist in a running series of jokes involving various characters unwillingly purchasing cookies due to the intervention of her Mafiosos. Joined with Lord Milligan during the Quantum Crook storyline.
  • Religious Zealot: Known by no other name, the stereotypical Religious Zealot spreads the word of Jesus hoping to lead everyone to eternal salvation. Naturally, he's not treated too kindly by the guy who has Satan as a girlfriend. Ironically enough, he is probably the least zealous character in the entire comic.
  • Azrael: A demon who tried to usurp rulership of Hell from Satan, when Satan's evil was diminished due to her feelings of love towards Andy. His coup was stopped, but since death is often nonpermanent in this comic, he might well be plotting his revenge right now...
  • Mabel: Head of the local homeowners association, wants Casey and Andy out of the neighborhood for obvious reasons. However, on account of her understandable fear of their home and anything to do with it, she targets Jenn instead, with complaints about obnoxious garden furniture.
  • The Bug Fairy: A cute little blue fairy, who causes and thrives on software bugs.
  • King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden: For no apparent reason, has decided to couch-surf at Casey and Andy's house. They attempted to get him to sign off on the Magna Carta, on the pretense that it was a delivery receipt.
  • Death: You know this guy. Casey and Andy probably constitute half of his workload. Major character in the early days of the comic, but hasn't featured for over a year.
  • The Violators: Demons who occasionally take up Satan's workload. Andy is a regular victim of theirs when on his all-too-frequent trips to Hell.
  • God: Satan's father. Loathes Andy with a vengeance, and likes to drive home this point with the aid of lightning. Once arrested and successfully ticketed by Quantum Cop.
  • Aliens from Neptar: These creatures, none of whom have ever been given a name, variously mutilate cattle, punch male humans in their crotches, and stick probes up Casey's ass. Overall, they are not a friendly people. Quantum Cop is, of course, more than a match for them.

Andi dimension

A dimension of opposites that Andy visited to test his parallel-dimension-travel-o-mat.
  • Andi: Andy's extra-dimensional counterpart. Female. Used to be sexually promiscuous until she found the Lord--which means not becoming religious, but rather becoming involved in a monogamous relationship with God. Once dated her dimension's Casey.
  • Quantum Crook: The doppelgnger of Quantum Cop who entered the primary dimension through a portal that Andy sloppily left open after his visit, and promptly started plotting to take it over. Every bit as logical as his goody-two-shoes clone, he was easily able to convince the Japanese government to relinquish control to Lord Milligan, thus earning the trust of the demonoid overlord and setting up an alliance. He was sent back to his home dimension by Andina.
  • Doctor Y: Doctor X's super-hero doppelgnger, the saviour of the world. Got killed by Quantum Crook using the Casey Vaporizo-Annihilatomat (an old invention of Andy).
  • Mary MacTavish: A busy shuttle commander.
  • Lord Milligan: A famous Japanese rock star.
  • The Mime Plumber: Of no consequence to anyone.

Andina dimension

A dimension which follows the rules of Dungeons & Dragons, first visited at Quantum Cop's request to enlist Andina's help in the Quantum Crook storyline, and later hosting the Mountain of Mages story arc.
  • Andina: The doppelgnger of Andy. Andina is both a cleric of the god Zogor, and his lover. She was brought to the primary dimension during Quantum Crook's storyline to revive the fallen Quantum Cop and to banish Quantum Crook, which she could do because he was technically an extraplanar creature. She returned to her own world afterwards.
  • Kasor: The doppelgnger of Casey. Kasor is a mage, and advisor to the Queen. He summoned Jenn to his dimension to replace Queen Jena when she was kidnapped.
  • Queen Jena: The doppelgnger of Jenn, and Queen of Fremontia. She was somehow transported to the strip's primary dimension. Jenn is currently pretending to be Queen Jena, in Queen Jena's home dimension.
  • Evil Grand Vizier Milligawain: The doppelgnger of Lord Milligan. As all Grand Viziers, he's trying to take over the throne; indeed this is a requirement for the job. Lord Milligan, being an extremely traditional villain in the prime dimension, was perfect for the job.
  • Quantum Ninja: The doppelgnger of Quantum Cop. Works for Queen Jena. Has a π symbol on her forehead.
  • Stygian Zealot: The doppelgnger of the Religious Zealot. Wore blue and gold armor. Was sent to assassinate Queen Jena and was casually dispatched by Quantum Ninja while Jenn (and most of the reading audience) was assuming the blue and gold-armored figure was Quantum Cop's equivalent.
  • Mari: The doppelgnger of Mary MacTavish. A ruthless mercenary who works for Evil Grand Vizier Milligawain. Loathes puns just as the prime dimension's Mary does.
  • Cujo: Queen Jena's pet snake.
  • Stan: Chief Paper-pusher of the Underwriterworld. Satan's equivalent in this dimension. He has many forms.
  • King Bloid: King of the Zarb. The counterpart of the crotch-punching alien from Neptar. Likes cows in an impure way.
  • Accounting Irregularity Fairy: The Bug Fairy's counterpart, and head mage of the Underwriterworld.
  • The Devourer of Worlds: High Wizard of the Zarb.
