Carl BaratBorn on June 6, 1978, Carl Barat is co-front-man of punk and garage rock revivalists The Libertines. Carl was born in Basingstoke and he divided his youth between his father, who worked in an armaments factory, and his mother, who was part of the commune-dwelling counterculture, into CND and peace groups. Carl spent part of his childhood living with his mother on a commune in Somerset. Around the time he met fellow libertine Pete Doherty in 1996, Carl was taking a drama degree at Brunel University in Uxbridge. Carl was somewhat disillusioned by his fellow drama students, although he did meet and get on well with a girl called Amy, who happened to be Peter's sister. Through Amy, Carl met Peter and The Libertines were formed. They instantly formed a strong friendship, the two building a mythical view of a British arcadia, named "Albion," populated in equal degrees by Dickensian gentlemen and cockney wide-boys. Both huge critical acclaim and widespread public adoration followed the release of their first and second LP's "Up the Bracket" and "The Libertines", and 2003/4 saw Barat and Doherty seemingly poised to go down in the hall of great British front-men duo's, alongside the likes of The Beatles's John Lennon & Paul McCartney, The Who's Pete Townsend & Rodger Daltrey or Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page & Robert Plant. However numerous troubles stemming from Doherty's continuing addiction to both heroin and crack-cocaine led to Barat firing Doherty from the Libertines in the fall of 2004 in an attempt to encourage his close friend to kick his ongoing drug habits. What was intended as a short leave of absence has turned into something more permanent, as Doherty has formed a new band, Babyshambles, whom he describes as "the new Libertines" and Carl calls "Pete's denial band" for their seemingly lax attitude regarding Pete's drug habits. Barat himself disbanded the Libertines in December 2004, citing his lack of desire to continue the band without Pete Doherty and an "ongoing problem with his health." In 2005, Carl underwent surgery to remove a tumor behind his ear and spent several weeks recovering from the operation while his former bandmate went on to make tabloid headlines revolving around his escalating drug addictions and tumultuous relationship with supermodel Kate Moss. In February of 2005, the Libertines won NME's Best British Band award and Carl paid tribute to Pete in his acceptance speech. Days later, it was officially announced that Carl had signed on to Vertigo Records as a solo artist and is expected to release an album at the end of the year. It is rumored that Carl also plans to form another band with one or more former Libertine bandmates.
