Cao Chong

Cao Chong 曹沖 (styled Cangshu 倉舒, 196-208) was a son of the great third century Chinese warlord Cao Cao. He is celebrated in Chinese folklore as a child prodigy, with the intelligence of an adult at the age of six. One famous story about Cao Chong describes an incident at the Han Dynasty imperial court, probably around 202, when the warlord Sun Quan sent Cao Cao a gift of an elephant. Cao Cao was curious about its weight so Cao Chong devised an ingenius method to weigh the animal. The elephant was placed onto a boat, and a mark made as to the level of the water. Then the elephant was replaced with objects until the water reached the same mark. Finally the objects could be weighed separately and the weight of the animal calculated. Other stories about Cao Chong relate his benevolence and emotional intelligence. It was said that he was a favourite of Cao Cao, who often remarked to his ministers that he had the intention to have Cao Chong as successor. Unfortunately, Cao Chong died of illness in 208 at the age of only thirteen. Cao Cao shed tears and is recorded to have said to Cao Pi, his ultimate successor: "This is my misfortune, but your good fortune." Cao Chong was entombed with the seal of the General of Chariots and Cavalry and with the daughter of an official who had also recently deceased. In 221, after the establishment of the state of Wei Cao Chong was posthumously enfeoffed as Marquis Ai of Deng (鄧哀侯), a title later elevated to the rank of Duke (公).
