Canada West
Canada West
was the western portion of the
Province of Canada
. It consisted of the part of the modern-day
Canadian province
of
Ontario
south of
Lake Nipissing
, the eastern shore of
Georgian Bay
, and the northern shore of
Lake Superior
. Formerly a colony called
Upper Canada
, it was merged with
Lower Canada
(present-day
Quebec
) to create the unified Province of Canada in
1840
based on
Lord Durham
's
Report on the Affairs of British North America (1839)
. The merger paved the way for
Canadian Confederation
in
1867
.
