Camden County, North Carolina Camden County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 6,885. Its county seat is Camden6. History The county was formed in 1777 from the northeastern part of Pasquotank County. It was named for Charles Pratt, 1st Lord Camden, who had opposed the Stamp Act. Law and Government Camden County is a member of the Albemarle Commission regional council of governments. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 792 km² (306 mi²). 623 km² (241 mi²) of it is land and 168 km² (65 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 21.27% water. Townships The county is divided into three townships: Courthouse, Shiloh, and South Mills. Adjacent Counties and Independent Cities Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,885 people, 2,662 households, and 2,023 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (29/mi²). There are 2,973 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 80.62% White, 17.27% Black or African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,662 households out of which 31.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.20% are married couples living together, 9.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.00% are non-families. 20.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 2.97. In the county the population is spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 6.30% from 18 to 24, 30.50% from 25 to 44, 25.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 98.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.90 males. The median income for a household in the county is $39,493, and the median income for a family is $45,387. Males have a median income of $36,274 versus $24,875 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,681. 10.10% of the population and 7.90% of families are below the poverty line.
