Camden, Maine

Camden is a town located in Knox County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,254. Ethernet inventor Bob Metcalfe has a house in nearby Lincolnville and John Sculley is also a resident. Each fall, a well-known technology conference called Pop!Tech is hosted there. Camden also has a very nice library rebuilt in a recent years. Camden is the home town of poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, and a large, but now obscurely relocated statue of her looks out over the harbor. From 1991 to 1994, the Center for Creative Imaging offered courses in digital imaging.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 66.8 km² (25.8 mi²). 47.4 km² (18.3 mi²) of it is land and 19.5 km² (7.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 29.14% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,254 people, 2,390 households, and 1,414 families residing in the town. The population density is 110.9/km² (287.3/mi²). There are 2,883 housing units at an average density of 60.9/km² (157.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.33% White, 0.25% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,390 households out of which 24.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.8% are non-families. 34.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.11 and the average family size is 2.71. In the town the population is spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 30.3% from 45 to 64, and 23.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 83.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.1 males. The median income for a household in the town is $39,877, and the median income for a family is $56,439. Males have a median income of $33,500 versus $26,645 for females. The per capita income for the town is $26,126. 8.0% of the population and 5.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. See also: Camden (CDP), Maine
