California City, incorporated in 1965, is a city located in the northern Antelope Valley in Kern County in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,385.

Geography

California City is located at 35°9'40" North, 117°52'23" West (35.161119, -117.873033). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 527.4 km² (203.6 mi²). 527.2 km² (203.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.04% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 8,385 people, 3,067 households, and 2,257 families residing in the city. The population density is 15.9/km² (41.2/mi²). There are 3,560 housing units at an average density of 6.8/km² (17.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 68.19% White, 12.82% Black or African American, 1.56% Native American, 3.73% Asian, 0.32% Pacific Islander, 7.43% from other races, and 5.94% from two or more races. 16.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,067 households out of which 39.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.8% are married couples living together, 13.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% are non-families. 21.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.15. In the city the population is spread out with 30.7% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 99.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.0 males. The median income for a household in the city is $45,735, and the median income for a family is $51,402. Males have a median income of $44,657 versus $28,152 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,902. 17.3% of the population and 12.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.0% of those under the age of 18 and 12.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
