Calhoun County, TexasCalhoun County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 20,647. Its county seat is Port Lavaca6. Calhoun County is named for John Caldwell Calhoun, the seventh vice president of the United States. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,673 km² (1,032 mi²). 1,327 km² (512 mi²) of it is land and 1,346 km² (520 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 50.36% water. Adjacent counties Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,647 people, 7,442 households, and 5,574 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (40/mi²). There are 10,238 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (20/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 78.04% White, 2.63% Black or African American, 0.49% Native American, 3.27% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 13.19% from other races, and 2.32% from two or more races. 40.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,442 households out of which 35.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.20% are married couples living together, 11.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.10% are non-families. 21.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.20. In the county, the population is spread out with 28.50% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 13.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 100.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.70 males. The median income for a household in the county is $35,849, and the median income for a family is $39,900. Males have a median income of $35,957 versus $19,772 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,125. 16.40% of the population and 12.70% of families are below the poverty line.
