Calheta (Azores)

Calheta is a municipality in central the part of the Azores. The parish population in 2001 is 1,249, its density is 65.8/km² and the area is 18,98km². The population is 4,069(2001) and the area is 126.51 km. It is divided into 5 parishes (freguesias). The municipality includes the eastern portion of the island of So Jorge. It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on all sides except West, where is borders the municipality of Velas. The five parishes of Calheta are: For statistical and administrative reasons, since there is a municipality also called Calheta in the island of Madeira, is it is known as Calheta dos Aores rather than Calheta, while that Calheta of Madeira is known as Vila da Calheta.
