Cahawba, AlabamaCahawba (sometimes spelled Cahaba) was the first capital of Alabama. Established in 1820, Cahawba served as the capital until the 1860s, when flooding and yellow fever drove the citizens out of the town. The capital was then located in Montgomery, Alabama. During the American Civil War, Cahawba served as a Confederate prison. The ruins of the city are still visible.
