Buster SwordThe "buster sword" first appeared in the video game Final Fantasy VII, wielded by the main character, Cloud Strife, and is over a foot in width and at least six feet (1.8 m) in length. The term has come to include any ridiculously oversized single edged sword in video games or anime. Assuming the weapon ia a simple block of steel (as opposed to being hollow or made of a lighter alloy), its weight can easily be calculated. Assuming six feet (1.8 m) in length, one foot (300 mm) in width, and one cm in depth (absurdly thin considering the other dimensions), and that steel has a density of 7.8 g/cm² weight=(72in*2.54)(12in*2.54)(1 cm)*7.8/1000= 43.48 kg = 95.62 lb This is reasonable compared to the "half-sized" variant of the Buster sword which is available for purchase. This "miniature" beast weighs in at thirteen pounds (6 kg), has a three feet (1 m) blade, and is terribly unbalanced (meaning that it is extremely difficult to wield). A full sized version would weigh eight times that amount (twice the length, twice the width, twice the thickness), or 104 lb (47 kg) of steel with a point of balance over a foot (300 mm) away from the guard. Despite legends to the contrary, no man on Earth can wield such a blade. Consider that a bench press bar in a gym weighs a "mere" forty pounds (18 kg). The buster sword is useful in animation due to the fact that the eye cannot lose track of the sword as they often do with smaller blades. Also, the size of a sword makes a great impact on the viewer, showing the swordsman to have superhuman speed and strength. Unfortunately, that is what they would need in order to use such a weapon.
