BSOD is the abbreviation for The original abbreviation referred to the Windows 3.x failure mode, but over time the system error screens came to be referred to as "screens of death" too. The Jargon File suggests that the term was originally an allusion to the "floating head of death" in a popular Far Side cartoon.
