Brynjlfur SveinssonBrynjlfur Sveinsson (1605–1675) served as Bishop of the village Sklholt in the south of Iceland. He is currently pictured on the Icelandic 1000 krnur bill. In 1643 he named the collection of Old Norse mythological and heroic poems Edda. Brynjlfur attributed the manuscript to Smundr fri but scholars agree, that whoever wrote the Eddic poems, whether in the sense of being the compiler or the poet, it can't have been Smundr. The attribution is due to Brynjlfur Sveinsson, but it is not known how he reached that conclusion. What seems to be obvious, is multiple authorship over a long period of time.
