Broussard is a town located in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,874.

Geography

Broussard is located at 30°8'32" North, 91°57'49" West (30.142329, -91.963644). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 29.6 km² (11.4 mi²). 29.5 km² (11.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.18% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,874 people, 2,197 households, and 1,619 families residing in the town. The population density is 199.1/km² (515.7/mi²). There are 2,346 housing units at an average density of 79.5/km² (205.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 81.31% White, 16.70% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 1.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,197 households out of which 41.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.0% are married couples living together, 14.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% are non-families. 21.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.11. In the town the population is spread out with 28.8% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 34.3% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 7.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.0 males. The median income for a household in the town is $36,676, and the median income for a family is $45,668. Males have a median income of $36,368 versus $21,833 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,441. 12.4% of the population and 9.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.6% of those under the age of 18 and 10.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
