Brookfield, Connecticut

Brookfield is a town located in northern Fairfield County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 15,664. Originally called Newbury Parish, incorporating parts of neighboring Newtown and Danbury, the town was renamed Brookfield in 1788 for the Reverend Brooks.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 52.8 km² (20.4 mi²). 51.3 km² (19.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.94% water, most of this area being Candlewood Lake.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 15,664 people, 5,572 households, and 4,368 families residing in the town. The population density is 305.4/km² (791.1/mi²). There are 5,781 housing units at an average density of 112.7/km² (292.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.29% White, 0.76% Black or African American, 0.07% Native American, 2.48% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 2.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,572 households out of which 39.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.1% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.6% are non-families. 17.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.18. In the town the population is spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 27.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.0 males. The median income for a household in the town is $82,706, and the median income for a family is $91,296. Males have a median income of $63,396 versus $36,318 for females. The per capita income for the town is $37,063. 2.3% of the population and 1.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.4% of those under the age of 18 and 2.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
