Brom (Inheritance)

In Christopher Paolini's Inheritance trilogy, Brom is an old storyteller who leads Eragon part of the way on his quest to avenge his uncle's death. Brom guides Eragon on his journey at first, but only tells Eragon that he needs training to be a Dragon Rider. He actually is part of the Varden, an organization against the Empire, and used to be a Dragon Rider in his time. His dragon was Saphira, and he also killed Morzan, the last of the Forsworn. When Eragon, Saphira and Brom are captured by the Ra'zac, who killed Eragon's uncle, Brom leaps in front of a dagger thrown at Eragon by one of the Ra'zac after Murtagh rescues them. Brom dies after revealing to Eragon that he was once a Dragon Rider.
