Brasnet

BRASnet is the largest IRC network in Brazil, founded early in 1996 (when Internet was still unpopular in the country). The network started with only two servers and a group of friends, but in the six following months it gained attention of various ISP's and users, experiencing a quick growth (registering peaks of 300 users, a notorious number for 1996). At the end of the same year, the network had already a 1000 users peak, reaching 2700 in the end of 1997. This was mostly due to migration of users coming from BrasIRC. The network continued to grow in rates of more than 200% a year. In January 2003, it reached 48,000 users and more than a million connections a day. Last peaks registered were of 53,000 in July and 60,000 in November, both of 2003. Some people claim that a big part of this peak was the result of attacks and social engineering by BRASnet members over RedeBrasil de Servidores de IRC, prompting RedeBrasil de Servidores de IRC's servers merge to BRASnet. In the end of 2004 the BRASnet was attacked by cracker groups as a result of their administration conduct along the time. Because of these attacks, and also because of the advertising of MSN Messenger in the brazilian MTV, it lost a big part of the users and months after that some real servers, (e.g. Unisys, Telemar, HotLink, NLink) left the network.
