Box Elder is a census-designated place located in Montana. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 794.

Geography

Box Elder is located at 48°18'26" North, 110°0'10" West (48.307210, -110.002873). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.9 km² (5.8 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 794 people, 183 households, and 167 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 53.3/km² (138.1/mi²). There are 190 housing units at an average density of 12.8/km² (33.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 4.16% White, 0.00% African American, 94.84% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 2.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 183 households out of which 64.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.3% are married couples living together, 29.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 8.2% are non-families. 4.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 1.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.34 and the average family size is 4.49. In the CDP the population is spread out with 47.9% under the age of 18, 11.5% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 10.1% from 45 to 64, and 3.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 19 years. For every 100 females there are 88.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.0 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $19,728, and the median income for a family is $18,913. Males have a median income of $19,773 versus $20,795 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $6,128. 51.2% of the population and 47.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 59.1% of those under the age of 18 and 21.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
