Bosco-gurin

Bosco-Gurin is a small village situated in the southernmost canton of Switzerland (Ticino). In 2001, there were only 79 inhabitants left. Bosco-Gurin is the only German speaking village in this otherwise Italian speaking part of Switzerland. People immigrated there in the 13th century coming from their native upper parts of the canton of Valais. They brought with them their extremely archaic German (Valser) dialect. Today the Valser dialect is being abandoned in favour of the Italian language.
