BlurbA blurb is a short summary or some words of praise accompanying a creative work. The word usually refers to the words on the back of the book but they can be commonly seen on DVD and Video cases, portal websites and news sites. The word originated with a 1907 book by humorist Gelett Burgess in which, under her picture, a young lady Miss Belinda Blurb offered elaborate complements on the contents of the book. A blurb on a book or a film can be any combination of quotes from the work, the author, the publisher, reviewers or fans, a summary of the plot, a biography of the author or simply claims about the importance of the work. Many humorous books and films parody the use of blurbs by amongst other things overly fulsome praise by unlikely people and insults disguised as praise. On the Internet a blurb is used to give a brief description of an article, picture, and/or diagram. Blurbs can be anything from a short incomplete sentence to a full paragraph of text, helping the reader decipher the title, picture, and/or diagram. For instance, Wikipedia's is "The Free Encyclopedia".
