Bland County is a county located in the state of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 6,871. Its county seat is Bland ⁶.

Geography

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 6,871 people, 2,568 households, and 1,908 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (19/mi²). There are 3,161 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (9/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.82% White, 4.19% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 0.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,568 households out of which 28.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.40% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.70% are non-families. 23.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.85. In the county, the population is spread out with 19.40% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 30.60% from 25 to 44, 27.90% from 45 to 64, and 14.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 119.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 121.90 males. The median income for a household in the county is $30,397, and the median income for a family is $35,765. Males have a median income of $30,801 versus $23,380 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,744. 12.40% of the population and 9.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.20% are under the age of 18 and 22.60% are 65 or older.
