Black PublishingPortraits of Black Achievement: Composing Successful Careers was a 2001 book by Jacqui Macdonald. This book is based on 72 successful black professionals working on a range of occupations. The interviews demonstrate the positive contribution that black people are making to British society. At a time when there is much emphasis on black under achievement, this book seeks to redress the balance and acknowledge blacc success. The interviewees include Lenny Henry, Syan Slake, Paul Boateng MP, Bruce Oldfield, Pogus Caesar, Trevor Phillips, Brenda Emmanus, Lola Young and Sir Herman Ousley, discuss their life experiences including family, education, work and community - and what it means to be black and professional in the UK. They provide a revealing glimpse of the different experiences and motivations that have shaped their careers. The book seeks to promote the achievements and successes of black people that are often overlooked by schools, the media and society in general. It is designed to motivate young people to construct their own futures and encourage them to aspire towards fulfilling careers. The accompanying black and white photographs by Robert Taylor capture something of each interviewee's individuality and character. The book launch was held at the prestigious British Library in July 2001 Publication: June 2001 ISBN: 1 902876 25 3 Publishers: Lifetime Careers Wiltshire http://www.lifetime-publishing.co.uk
