Black AngelsThe Black Angels are one of the biggest, strongest and most notorious Chicano gangs from the Inland Empire of Southern California, and dates back to the start of the Mexican Mafia in the 1950's. Better known as the Onterio SurX3 OVS Varrio Sunkist St Los B.As, they are well known for their three-tier system of gang hierarchy. Like almost all Hispanic gangs, OVS is aligned with the Mexican Mafia prison gang. A number of its members have risen to positions of prominence in the Mexican Mafia while incarcerated in state prison, allowing the gang to have direct influence over OVS. Most well-known is Ruben "Tupi" Hernandez, a veteran of the Ontario, California Black Angels - the highest of the three-tier system in which OVS operates - and arguably the most infamous Inland Empire gang member of the late 1980s. Incarcerated a number of times during his youth, Hernandez joined the Mexican Mafia as a teenager and quickly became known as one of the most dangerous inmates in the California prison system after proving his eagerness and devotion to carrying out the violent orders of Mexican Mafia leaders. Then, in June 1987, after completing an eight-year prison sentence for robbery, authorities say Hernandez brutally beat and executed a woman, her young roommate, and her boyfriend, believing the woman was responsible for the murder of a fellow Black Angels member. This gang currently boast of 2500 members and still growing strong.
