Binary Large Object

A Binary Large Object (or BLOB) is a collection of binary data stored as a single entity in a database management system. BLOBs are typically images, audio or other multimedia objects, though sometimes binary code is stored as a BLOB. Database support for BLOBs is not universal. The data type and definition was introduced to describe data not originally defined in traditionally computer database systems but became possible when disk space became cheap and marketeers wanted to push non-standard non-queryable ways of using their database systems to enhance non-portablity. Note this definition gained popularity with IBM's DB2 and known as otherwise by competition. A blob can also be a term that describes very large things.
