Bikutsi

Bikutsi is a musical genre from Cameroon. It developed from the traditional styles of the Beti, or Ewondo, people, who live around the city of Yaounde. In its modern form, bikutsi is very popular, and rivals makossa as the country's most renowned style. Popular bikutsi first appeared in the 1940s with the recording of Anne-Marie Nzie. Some twenty years later, the style was electrified with the addition of keyboards and guitars. The most popular performer of this period was Messi Me Nkonda Martin, frontman for Los Camaroes, though other bands, like Les Vtrans were also popular. International acclaim began in 1987 with the formation of Les Ttes Brles by Jean Marie Ahanda. More modern performers include Jimmy Mvondo Mvelé and Mbarga Soukous. Bikutsi is an exciting music in 6/8 time, accompanied by a dance which consist of the vigorous shaking of shoulders and pelvis. The most popular modern singer in the genre is K Tino, self-styled 'femme du peuple' ('the people's woman'.) Her performances are often called 'pornographic', although she herself has repeatedly denied this. However, videos abound where she goes down on all fours and shakes her hips vigorously and in a decidedly erotic maner against the pelvis of a male dancer who stands behind her. In this respect modern Bikutsi resembles Mapouka from the Ivory Coast, which also often has a strong erotic component.
