Big Brother (Australia) is a reality show shown on the Ten Network in which a number of contestants live in an isolated house trying to avoid being evicted by the public with the aim of winning a large cash prize at the end of the run. It is based on the Big Brother series produced by Endemol. Four series have been shown to date, all of which have been hosted by Gretel Killeen. All the houses have been at the same location, the Dreamworld theme park on the Gold Coast, Queensland. The house is extensively re-modelled between each series.

Series 1 (2001)

Series 1 was fairly basic and didn't have any of the big surprises and strange elements such as multiple houses that the later series had. The winner of the series was Ben Williams, and the runner up was Blair McDonough, who now stars on the Australian TV show Neighbours. It was also the only series to allow housemates to nominate people without a reason (something that is enforced strongly in later series) and where people were allowed to bring in reading material. Some of the more memorable moments of the series were:
  • Christina and Peter, a couple that got together early in the series, and their antics under the bed covers or "doona dancing" as it was dubbed. Many viewers suspected some sort of sexual activity went on, though it was clearly not full intercourse as both participants remained lying beside each other on their backs for the duration of the incident.
  • Housemate Andy Silva, who was well known for showering outside in the backyard and her stories about her sexual adventures. Her goal of sleeping with at least seven other housemates (male or female) never got a chance to be completed as she was evicted in the second week.
  • Sara-Marie, the bum-dancing strip-club manager famous for loud behaviour and wearing bunny ears through her stay in the house. The show's most famous cult-figure, she was somewhat surprisingly evicted before Blair or Ben.

Series 2 (2002)

Series 2 was very similar to Series 1, and was the only series to use the same house as a previous series. Simultaneous with the main house was a house of six potential intruders. A number of television specials allowed viewers to get to know the intruders and viewers were able to vote which three actually went into the house. A close relationship formed between Nathan Martin and Jessica Hardy (Marty and Jess) who have since married. The two starred in a television show named Marty & Jess: An Outback Wedding which featured their wedding plans and ceremony.

Series 3 (2003)

Series 3 was the most complicated to date with the housemates starting in separate houses - a "round house" and a "square house". Housemate Benjamin Archbold was sent in first and spent the entire first day by himself. Other housemates were progressively admitted. The two houses merged after some time. The cameras were completely hidden for the first time in this series. Previously the housemates would play games with the cameras which they could see following them. Two new shows were introduced:
  • Up Late hosted by Mike Goldman. Mike Goldman was best known for doing the voiceovers in the daily show. Up Late was broadcast late at night showing live vision from the house with minimal editing. Often the footage was simply of the housemates sleeping.
  • The Insider hosted by Tim Ferguson had additional gossip and discussion about the show.
Late in the series saw a visit from Anouska Golebiewski who was the first to be evicted from the UK BB showing at the time. She was brought in for a little over a week to spice things up. The biggest star and eventual winner of Series 3 was Regina Bird. Reggie earned public admiration with her unique down-to-earth personality, strong work ethic and utter stupidity.

Series 4 (2004)

Series 4 was billed as "back to basics". Unlike earlier series, all housemates were let into the house together and former surprise elements such as swimming pools and gym equipment were all exposed from the beginning. There were two intruders and a special visit from Miriam, the transsexual star of the show There's Something About Miriam. Prizemoney was raised from $250 000 to $1 000 000. There were a number of controversies during the 2004 series:
  • Housemate Merlin Luck staged a protest at his live eviction show. Upon entering the arena, he revealed a makeshift banner which read "Free Th Refugees". The letter E had fallen off and it was intended to read "Free The Refugees" in reference to Australian Government policy of mandatory detention of asylum seekers. Merlin placed tape over his mouth and refused to speak during the live show. The following night, he spoke about his actions in the highest rating show of the timeslot for that night.
  • The producers were criticized for making a deal with housemate Ryan Fitzgerald who was permitted to wear a t-shirt that was branded with "MLS" (acroynym for Massive Loser Squad). The t-shirts were being sold while the show was running and Ryan's friends admitted that a proportion of the profits was going towards votes to keep him in the house, thus giving him an unfair advantage.
  • Housemate Bree was incorrectly evicted instead of Wesley due to a vote counting error. The error was discovered after the Sunday night eviction show. Bree had already met up with friends and family. She was returned to the house the following night (Monday) and Wesley was evicted in a special show on the following Thursday.
The two intruders were some of the least liked in all the four series, with Violeta being chosen for eviction by every single housemate, and then Monica, who already had a boyfriend outside, immediately started falling for Ryan, and she and Bree developed and intense dislike between each other. When Monica was finally up for eviction, she was evicted with a very large percentage of the votes.

Series 5 (2005)

As of March 2005, auditions for Series 5 housemates are underway. In a departure from usual procedure, candidates were not required to send in videos of themselves as had been the case in previous series. Instead, the producers toured major mainland cities and conducted interviews. According to a speculation started by an unofficial Big Brother gossip site, housemates are believed to be entering the house on Saturday, 7th May 2005.

Celebrity Big Brother (2002)

There has been one Celebrity Big Brother series featuring some familiar names as housemates, with a proportion of the profits from eviction votes going to charity. As a reality show, Celebrity Big Brother (Australia) was not very successful. The cameras were not permitted in the bedrooms or bathrooms. However, the series did have its moments, the most notorious of which was the ejection of a housemate, former AFL football star Warwick Capper, who exposed himself to female housemates.
