Bicheno, Tasmania

Bicheno is a town on the east coast of Tasmania, Australia. It lies 185 km north-east of Hobart on the Tasman Highway, and has a population of 705 (1991 census). It is part of the Municipality of Glamorgan/Spring Bay. The town is primarily a fishing port and a beach resort. The area was first used by sealers and whalers, but later became a port for local coal mines, which closed in 1855. Today it is very popular among Tasmanians as a holiday destination, along with many other towns in the area, due to the warmer weather on the east coast of the state.
