Bhse OnkelzThe Bhse Onkelz (German bse Onkel - evil uncles) is one of the most successful German rock groups. In 1980 Stephan Weidner (17, guitar), Kevin Russell (16, vocals) and Peter 'Pe' Schorowsky (17, drums) formed the group in Hsbach near Frankfurt am Main as a punk band. In 1981 Michael 'Gonzo' Rhr (18), who had played the guitar for six years in several minor bands, joined the Bhse Onkelz to play the bass. Later Stephan and Gonzo switched the instruments. In the early 1980th the Bhse Onkelz were part of the Oi movement, which was coming over from Great Britain to Germany. Though they were unpolitical, few songs could be interpreted as hostile to foreigners at this time and they played early songs like "Trken raus" ("Turks out") or "Deutschland den Deutschen" ("Germany to the Germans"). 1985-1987 the band left this attitude. At the beginning of the 1990th the media began with lots of coverage about the Onkelz' past. The existence of xenophobic songs was not being accepted by most media and the public image of a Nazi band was formed. With "Heilige Lieder" ("holy songs") 1992 the Onkelz got into the top ten of the album charts for the first time. The negative press coverage increased, some stores, many radio stations and the two biggest music TV channels in Germany, MTV and VIVA, began to boycott the Onkelz, but were not able to stop their success. The Onkelz admitted that they have made mistakes in the past and assured that they disagree with racism and fascism. The today's opinion about the Onkelz' past is diverse - some people condemn whereas some glorify the group. The last four new studio albums were on the first place of the German album charts for several weeks. The tour 2004 with 24 concerts was completely sold out. The Onkelz announced that they are going to quit making music after the last album "Adios", the tour 2004 and a two day lasting goodbye festival with 100.000 people in 2005.
