Bethany Hamilton

Bethany Hamilton is a surfer from Hawaii. Beginning her career as a surfer with her first competition at age 11, she was an accomplished surfer and well-respected in the surfing world by age 13. She received attention from the mass media after her left arm was bitten off by a shark. This incident occurred on October 31, 2003. She has appeared on 20/20, Good Morning America, and Inside Edition. MTV Books will publish Hamilton's book, Soul Surfer, which describes how she recovered from the loss of her left arm to return to surfing.
