Bertha (Daw)

Bertha is a custom built dual Digital Audio Workstation, used for recording/remastering of live concert recordings. Bertha, built by "J. Ashley" utilizes a Samplitude Producer v7.0 on the recording station and Wavelab v4.0 on the playback station. Bertha is so-named in honor of the Grateful Dead's song Bertha. Both stations of which Bertha is comprised utilize a RME Digi96 PST soundcard. In addition to many commercially available effects, Bertha uses a proprietary process, developed by the owner over the course of 38 years in the study of Audio and Electronic principles. The re-mastering process, actually a combination of three separate processes, "is the heart of Bertha", according to J. Ashley. The adjustments made in the remastering process occur '"between" the two stations in real-time during the recording process. It is this process that makes Bertha Remasters unique. Recordings remastered by the 'Bertha process' are well-regarded in the tape trading community, principally the Grateful Dead community. Other bands such as The Dead, The Other Ones, and Phil and Friends are among the performers on Bertha Remastered recordings. Within the lossless audio trading community it is considered bad form, typically, for one to modify recordings in any way. Three things make Bertha remasters acceptable to this community:
  • All changes are annottated, the files are never represented to be unaltered originals.
  • The text files (customarily text files with information are distributed with audio files in the lossless community), besides noting the changes, typically have an email link for someone interested in obtaining the original unaltered file.
  • Bertha remasters "sound better" -- the main reason Bertha exists is to improve sonic quality and listenability.
