Benton, Illinois

Benton is a city located in Franklin County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,880. It is the county seat of Franklin County.

Geography

Benton is located at 38°0'15" North, 88°54'58" West (38.004085, -88.916053). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.2 km² (5.5 mi²). 13.9 km² (5.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.55% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,880 people, 2,938 households, and 1,824 families residing in the city. The population density is 496.5/km² (1,286.2/mi²). There are 3,270 housing units at an average density of 236.0/km² (611.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.72% White, 0.29% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 0.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,938 households out of which 26.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.7% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.9% are non-families. 33.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.86. In the city the population is spread out with 22.0% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 22.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 86.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.8 males. The median income for a household in the city is $27,177, and the median income for a family is $35,339. Males have a median income of $27,323 versus $19,403 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,787. 17.5% of the population and 15.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.6% of those under the age of 18 and 11.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
