In Lewis Carroll's poem The Hunting of the Snark, the Bellman is the leader of the Snark hunting trip. He is a fine speaker, a handsome and inspiring man, but a rather poor sailor. This was charming, no doubt: but they shortly found out - That the Captain they trusted so well

A bellman can also be a name for a bellhop.
