Bellingshausen Island
Bellingshausen Island
(5925S 02703W) is one of the most southerly of the South Sandwich Islands, close to
Thule Island
and
Cook Island
. The crater on Bellingshausen Island is around 500 feet in diameter and some 60m deep. Bellingshausen is named after
Russian
Antarctic
explorer
Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen
(
1778
-
1852
) who discovered the island. Bellingshausen led an expedition which discovered and named several islands in the region. Discoveries included
Peter I Island
,
Zavodovski Island
and
Alexander Island
.
