Geography Beacon is located at 41°16'33" North, 92°40'51" West (41.275948, -92.680733). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 518 people, 208 households, and 153 families residing in the city. The population density is 198.0/km² (514.5/mi²). There are 217 housing units at an average density of 83.0/km² (215.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.53% White, 0.39% African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 2.51% from two or more races. 0.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 208 households out of which 31.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% are married couples living together, 11.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.0% are non-families. 21.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.85. In the city the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 109.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.0 males. The median income for a household in the city is $32,000, and the median income for a family is $35,469. Males have a median income of $31,500 versus $26,641 for females.
