Bayou La Batre is a city located in Mobile County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 2,313.

Geography

Bayou La Batre is located at 30°24'12" North, 88°14'53" West (30.403253, -88.248117). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.8 km² (4.2 mi²). 10.4 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.59% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,313 people, 769 households, and 599 families residing in the city. The population density is 221.6/km² (573.9/mi²). There are 845 housing units at an average density of 81.0/km² (209.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 52.44% White, 10.25% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 33.29% Asian, 0.43% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 2.38% from two or more races. 1.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 769 households out of which 37.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.8% are married couples living together, 17.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.0% are non-families. 17.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.01 and the average family size is 3.40. In the city the population is spread out with 29.9% under the age of 18, 11.1% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 100.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.5 males. The median income for a household in the city is $24,539, and the median income for a family is $27,580. Males have a median income of $22,847 versus $14,042 for females. The per capita income for the city is $9,928. 28.2% of the population and 22.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 35.9% of those under the age of 18 and 17.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
