BawmThe Bawm are a tribal group living in the Bandarban district and a small fraction in the Rangamati district of the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh. Of Burmese origin and speaking a Tibeto-Burman dialect, their tribal population stands at 6,000. Their name Bawm means ties. Religion Owing to the efforts of Baptist Christian missionaries funded by the British government since 1918, the majorty of the Bawm have converted to Christianity, and it was said that all of them are Christians. As of today, there are relatively few Bawm who still cling to their Animist faith. Even then, the concept of such ties has developed from their culture of doing collectively all things of life, including hunting, singing and dancing, eating and drinking or offering homage to gods has developed to such an extent that elements of their Animist beliefs have largely interwined with Christianity. One can see Animist influences in their rituals, culture, and beliefs. A few of the Christian Bawm, however, still worship Animist gods side by side with Christian gods, although the majorty have abandoned much of the Animist traditions. External links
