Battle Of The Pyramids

The Battle of the Pyramids was a battle in 1798 between the French army in Egypt under Napoleon Bonaparte and local Mameluke forces. In July of 1798, Napoleon was marching from Alexandria toward Cairo while occupying Egypt. Meeting the main army of the ruling Mamelukes near the Pyramids, he was outnumbered by a factor of 2 or 3 to 1. He organized his army into squares with cannon at the center of each square, and advanced to turn the enemy left, dispersing the charges of the Mameluke cavalry with artillery fire. He stormed the Egyptian camp, scattering their army. After the battle, organized resistance to Napoleon temporarily ended, and the Mameluke armies retreated to Syria to reorganize.
