American Civil War
, which started on
October 26

1864
and ended on
October 29
,
1864
. Commanding the Union forces was
Brigadier General
Robert S. Granger
who had approximately 5,000 men under his command. Commanding the Confederate forces was
General
John B. Hood
, who had the
Army of Tennessee
under his command. The battle took place at
Decatur, Alabama
. The confederate General Hood and the Army of Tennessee began the
Franklin-Nashville campaign
in the fall of 1864. On October 26 1864, Gen. Hood and his army attempted to cross the
Tennessee River
near Decatur. However, under the leadership of Brig. Gen. Granger the Union forces (which had only around 5,000 men) were able to prevent Hoods army from crossing the river.
