On February 22 and 23 February 1847, approximately 20,000 soldiers of the Mexican Army under Gen. Antonio Lpez de Santa Anna attacked a United States Army force of approximately 5,000 soldiers under Gen. Zachary Taylor. The numerically disadvantaged invading U.S. army, using heavy artillery, successfully repulsed the Mexican attack on their position.
