Bat Yam

Bat Yam (בת ים) is a city in Israel, on the central coastal strip, just south of Tel Aviv, and part of the metropolis known as Gush Dan, in the Tel Aviv District. Bat Yam was established in 1926 as "Bayit va-gan" (House and garden), a neighbourhood dedicatad to orthodox Jews. However, the original plan did't come true. During the 1936 riots Bat-Yam was attacked by Arab gangs from its northern neighbour Jaffa and was almost abbandoned. This almost happened again in the 1948 war. In the first decades of Israel independene Bat Yam grew due to mass immigration, becoming a city in 1958. Its key feature is its beautiful beach, attracting many tourists every summer. It has today 134,000 residents (2002). Bat Yam has been since the fall of the Soviet Union one of the centers in Israel where Jewish refuges from the USSR came to. This has resulted in a steep rise in the ratio between the people who are already many years in Israel (Where some of them has left to the neigbouring cities like Holon and Rishon Lezion) to the newcommers.
