Baron Cromwell

The title Baron Cromwell has been created several times in the Peerage of England. The first creation, which was by writ, was for John de Cromwell in 1308. At his death, the barony became extinct for he left no heirs. The second creation was for Ralph de Cromwell in 1375, again by writ. At the death of the third baron, the title fell into abeyance between several coheirs. In 1490, it was deemed that Maud Stanhope was the only surviving coheir, so she became Baroness Cromwell, but at her death, the title again fell into abeyance. The third creation of the title was also by writ, and was for Sir Humphrey Bourchier, upon whose death the barony became extinct once more. Thereafter, creations were by letters patent rather than by writ. The fourth creation of the title was for the famous Thomas Cromwell, who served in many political offices, including Chancellor of the Exchequer, Lord Chancellor, and Lord Privy Seal. In 1540, Lord Cromwell was made Earl of Essex, but later that year he was executed for treason, and all of his titles were forfeit. The final creation of the title was in 1540, for Gregory Cromwell. The fourth baron of this creation was made Earl of Ardglass. The Earldom and Barony, however, both became extinct upon the death of the fourth earl. In 1923, the barony of Cromwell that had been created in 1375 was called out of a long abeyane by the Sovereign. The abeyance was terminated in favour of Robert Bewicke-Copley, whose heirs continue to hold the ancient barony.
