Bairiki (Village)

Bairiki is the only small town on the island of Bairiki, on (Tarawa) atoll. It's part of South Tarawa, the capital of Kiribati, also known as Teinainano Urban Council or TUC. From Bairiki to Bonriki, all the islands are united by roads and causeways, with no interruption. It is the main administrative centre of the republic of Kiribati (presidency and most of the ministeries) but the Parliament has been moved on Ambo Island, halfway to Bonriki. Often considered wrongly as the capital for the Republic of Kiribati, it's only a small part of it. In the village there is a small port (the main is on Betio islet) and quite near of Bairiki, but not on the island, an extension centre of the University of the South Pacific.
