B.j. RyanB.J. Ryan, born Robert Victor Ryan (December 28, 1975 in Bossier City, Louisiana), is a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball for the Baltimore Orioles (1999-present). Previously, Ryan played with the Cincinnati Reds (1999). He bats and throws left handed. In a six-year career, Ryan has compiled a 15-15 record with 365 strikeouts and a 3.79 ERA in 311 innings pitched. Ryan has a major league arm and solid confidence in his own abilities. With a sharp-breaking slider, a low 90s fastball and better than average control, he is almost as effective against right handed hitters as he is against lefties. His most productive season came in 2004, when he posted career highs in holds (21), ERA (2.28), strikeouts (122) and innings (87), demonstrating that he has become one of the more effective relievers in the American League. Jorge Julio was the Orioles' closer for three years, but when he lost his job during a rough stretch in last month of the 2004 season, Ryan took over as the stopper and he did the job well. Although Julio hopes to compete for the job in 2005, Ryan has the potential and assets to develop into the new Orioles closer. External links Ryan, T Ryan, T Ryan, T Ryan, T
