Avery is a town located in Red River County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 462.

Geography

Avery is located at 33°33'13" North, 94°46'49" West (33.553519, -94.780308). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.5 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.06% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 462 people, 210 households, and 136 families residing in the town. The population density is 187.8/km² (487.9/mi²). There are 241 housing units at an average density of 97.9/km² (254.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.54% White, 1.30% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.95% from two or more races. 0.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 210 households out of which 26.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.8% are married couples living together, 13.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% are non-families. 34.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.75. In the town the population is spread out with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 22.7% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 88.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 76.7 males. The median income for a household in the town is $21,146, and the median income for a family is $27,917. Males have a median income of $23,333 versus $16,346 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,180. 21.5% of the population and 14.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.3% of those under the age of 18 and 30.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
